the spongebob squarepants movie as an allegory for struggling to come out as gay:
assume “kid” means gay and “man” means straight
with that in mind the movie is about a young gay man not offered a promotion at work because his boss suspects he’s gay. this young man goes to his favorite gay bar (the goofy goober scene) and gets wasted with his best friend
the next day he has to embark on a quest to prove his worth. along the way he experiences discrimination
when he and his friend have their car stolen, they have to enter another type of bar: one where homosexuality is not allowed and anyone who is suspected of it will be beaten senseless. they’re saved only by the fact that, as is normal in society, they’re not the only ones there who are closeted. it’s even implied that this facade of hyper-masculinity invites gay culture to exist beneath it.
eventually, the young man and his friend are on the verge of admitting to each other that they’re gay as their quest seems to be failing. however, they’re fooled into thinking they can pass as straight for a short time, only to be met again and outed by a dangerous, masculine assassin
and I mean the next scenes of the film are spongebob and patrick crying a tear in the shape of a heart that revives them and then they ride on the back of david hasselhoff and perform a glam rock concert do I really need to even finish this part
